3G
3rd Generation of mobile networks, providing video calling, browsing and faster download speeds - up to 7 times faster than GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). 1st Generation was analogue, 2nd Generation was digital. 2.5G means GPRS

Access NetFront™ Web Browser
A browser for viewing content created for HTML 4.01, xHTML 1.0, CSS and Java script (ECMA script), WAP 2.0. Security protocols are SSL/TLS

BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)
This is software that is installed on a company’s server to enable the wireless link between the company’s network, the BlackBerry handheld device and the applications on the device

BlackBerry Internet Solution
BlackBerry Internet Service includes BlackBerry software, the handheld email service as well as full internet browsing

Blackberry®
Complete wireless solution for always connected* email – the network ‘pushes’ your email to your device – you don’t have to dial up to get it.

Bluetooth®
Enables you to wirelessly connect to mobile phones, computers and other devices so you can send and share information from a distance of about a metre away

Business Card Exchange
A function that lets you send and receive digital business cards with name, numbers and other contact information.

Client Access Licence (CAL)
Each BlackBerry user requires a client access licence. The standard BlackBerry Enterprise Server comes with 20 CALs and you can add users in increments of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 or 500. It is recommended that you have no more than 2000 users per BES for optimal performance. The Small Business Edition of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server comes with 5 CALs and you can add users in increments of 5 up to a maximum of 15 users. Additional CALs can be purchased at the time of order or at a later date. BlackBerry Internet Server users do not require CALs

Data Card
Provides access to email, the Internet and internal systems when slotted into your laptop

Data Connectivity
This refers to how you can connect devices to each other, either wirelessly or by cable

Dual band
Mobile phones that are capable of operating on two frequency bands such as 900 MHz and 1800 MHz

Fast Post
An advanced system connector for connecting a charger, portable handsfree, cable or other accessory

Flight Mode
Function that inactivates radio transmitters and receivers so that some functions can be used in places such as planes and hospitals

GPRS
General Packet Radio Service offers ‘always-on’, higher capacity, Internetbased content, enabling services such as colour Internet browsing, e-mail on the move, multimedia messages

IMEI
International Mobile Equipment Identifier is a 15-digit number; it’s unique to your mobile phone and can be found on the back of your phone or by typing *#06# on your phone, (this is free) and it will display the number

Infrared
Enables you to wirelessly connect to mobile phones, computers and other devices however, the devices must be very close to each other

Mega pixel camera
High resolution screen which gives sharp picture quality

Memory
A place on your phone used to store information such as phone numbers, text messages and pictures (measured in bytes). This can also be a plug-in card such as ‘SD Cards’ or ‘Flash Cards’

Modem
GSM Internet dial-up support

MP3
This is a music format, and lets you listen to music through your mobile

Opera Web Browsing
A browser for viewing content created for HTML 4.01, xHTML 1.0, CSS and Java script (ECMA script), WAP 2.0. Security protocols are SSL/TLS

PAC
If you want to bring your existing number with you, you need contact your existing service provider to get your Port Authorisation Code (PAC) code. (PAC codes are generally valid for 30 days)

PDA
Personal Digital Assistant for access calendar information, emails and, in some cases, the Internet

Phone book
You have memory space on your phone and SIM to store your contacts’ telephone numbers. You can search and dial instantly all the names and numbers of your contacts. This is sometimes also called the address book

PIM
Personal Information Management system means you can store personal details such as your calendar, task list and phone book

Pull email
This requires the user to make a connection with the server and collect messages

Push email
This uses Blackberry technology to send email messages directly to your mobile without you having to dial up to retrieve them

Quad band
These are mobile phones capable of operating on four frequency bands, including USA - 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz. Network frequencies can differ by country

QWERTY Keyboard
QWERTY refers to the most common form of layout of letters found on the keyboard of a typewriter or computer. The name refers to the first six letters at the top of the board

Roaming
Roaming allows you to make and receive calls on the same mobile phone when travelling outside of O2’s network

SBE BlackBerry Enterprise Server
This is the Small Business Edition of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It is exactly the same as the standard BES but allows a maximum of 15 users

Single Mailbox Technology
Send, receive, delete as if at your desktop using your existing corporate email system

Smartphone
This is a combination of mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA)

SMS
Short Message Service or text message enables you to send short messages (max. 160 characters) to friends and colleagues

Streaming
This means being able to view video and/or content ‘live’ from a network without having to first download the file to your mobile phone

Synchronization PC
Synchronize and share phone content with PC

Tri-band
This technology enables your mobile phone to make and receive calls in more countries (on three different frequencies, 900MHz and 1800MHz and the ‘American GSM’, or PCS 1900MHz)

Triple DES
In simple terms, this is basically protection for sending data wirelessly in a secure manner via your BlackBerry

UMTS
A 3G technology standard capable of data transfer 384 kbps

USB mass storage
Connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable, and the expandable and/or phone memory appears on the PC screen as a mass storage device

USB support
Connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable

Vodafone Business Email (VBE)
VBE is a service provided by Vodafone that allows customers to use their handset device as a mobile office. It enables customer’s access to real time (Push) email, to synchronise their outlook and receive Microsoft attachments, which they can review and even edit before sending on. VBE is available in Enterprise or Personal (Internet) versions.

WAP
Wireless Application Protocol enables you to see specially tailored Internet content to be viewed on the screen of your mobile or business device

Wireless Organiser
No need to synch to your PC

WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network allows you to wirelessly connect to your email and Internet at speeds of up to 11,000MB (currently the fastest way to get access to information whilst you’re on the move -faster than 3G). This is only available in wireless hotspots
